How to buy a winter camping tent...

during the winter camping tent in the snow There are differences between a winter camping tent and a regular tent. Camping in the winter months obviously requires that your gear is more ruggedly constructed than summertime gear would be. That's not to say you couldn't make do if you had to but like always, camping is easier and more enjoyable when you have the right gear. So here's what you need to know...

Winter camping tents are also called Four Season Tents. They tend to be heavier than tents you would use in the summertime because they are usually constructed of heavier fabrics that are more abrasion resistant. They usually have more poles and the poles are heavier to help withstand the weight created by snow loading. Because there are more poles they tend to interlock more intricately, reinforcing each other and causing the tent to be more sturdy. This also helps to minimize the amount of unsupported fabric between the poles.

The fly on a winter camping tent will also extend further to the ground and they will be equiped with foul weather venting. This is an important point to consider because during the winter months days are shorter and the weather can be more unpredictable. This means that winter campers spend more time in their tent than those who camp in the summertime.

Four seaon tents come with a rating for the number of occupants the tent can handle. This rating generally refers to the number of people it can hold, with their gear, to wait out a multi-day storm. The doors are bigger as well to make entry and exit easier while wearing bulky clothing.

Even though a tent has been constructed for winter use it should be noted that they are not impervious to damage. You should always make an effort to set up in an area that offers some shelter. Use your head for this, you don't want to suddenly be without a tent or some sort of shelter when you're winter camping.

Hopefully you have a good idea now as far as what to look for in a four season tent. Heavier material, reinforced seams, more poles, good ventilation etc...
