Take your water purifier camping...

You have to be sure to take your water purifier camping when you go. This little item is going to make your camping trip so much easier that you'll be very glad you took one with you.

I've seen lots of people pack water over the years and I'm sure you've seen them too. They usually have a large clear plastic container with a spout on it and they set it up on their picnic table. This works fine if you're at a family campground where there is a tap nearby to fill it up but for those of us that wish to be canoe camping or kayak camping, even hiking, then you really need to have some sort of water pump similar to the one pictured below... (click on it for details...)

MSR HyperFlow Microfilter Water Purifier

This particular one an MSR Hyperflow. I've chosen to display this one on the website because I own an MSR Waterfilter and can attest to the quality of MSR filters. Mine is slightly older of course but because it's a quality item I've not needed to replace it. If I were to replace it, it would very likely be with the one pictured above. This appears to be a newer version of mine and has a pre filter added to help extend the life of your filter.

The key thing to remember about taking your water purifier camping is that it's making life easier for you. Water is heavy. It weighs in the order of 10 pounds per gallon. Imagine hiking with a few gallons of that strapped to your shoulders! Not to mention that you would have to use it conservatively to ensure it lasts your whole trip. By having a decent filter in your possession you literally can have water any time you are near it. Water for drinking, cooking, making coffee, juice, whatever you like.

These filters remove all of the (possibly) dangerous pathogens from the water and make it safe to drink. You'll also notice that they remove the colour from the water. This is something that iodine tablets will not do and I for one feel better drinking water that looks cleaner. I always make an effort to drink either from a large body of water that looks "clean", i.e. there is not a lot of pollen and sediment on the surface of the water, or from a running source of water like a small river or creek. I stay away from using water near beaver dams because the water can become tainted by their feces and cause you to get "Beaver Fever". This quite an exquisite little inconvenience that I'm told makes you feel like you have the Flu for six months. None of us want that so be aware where you are getting your water. Having said that I've been camping for years and never had a problem with sickness. That's the reason I like to take my water purifier camping!
