Sleep in comfort in a motorcycle camping trailer...

A motorcycle camping trailer is one way of touring around the country that isn't really going to cost you an arm and a leg, and can offer you relative comfort as well.

I do have a motorcycle but I do not have a trailer for it. To be honest I've never really considered owning one until I started investigating them for this site. They're actually quite a neat little toy and for the all out motorcycle enthusiast they're the way to go. Maybe down the road it's a purchase I might consider.

After checking them out for a while I've found that the average motorcycle camping trailer weighs in at around 250 lbs. That's not a lot of weight when you consider most riders likely are close to 200 lbs themselves. However the center of gravity is nice and low to the ground and it's being towed on wheels with good bearings etc, so I would think it may be almost effortless to pull one. However you need to consider speed and stopping distances and such with the added weight. Fill your trailer with a few days worth of supplies and the weight can increase dramatically. I don't think I would consider pulling a trailer on anything other that a Goldwing type of bike or a big Harley Davidson, something that already has a lot of weight to help control this trailer you're pulling. Anything smaller and I think you may have a somewhat difficult time trying to stop your bike.

To me the real beauty of owning a motorcyle camping trailer would be that I could experience the feel of the open road, not have to shell out a pile of money for hotel rooms and still sleep in relative comfort that is dry, off the ground and waterproof. Most manufacturers claim that their trailer will set upt in anywhere from seconds to just a minute or two. This makes them convenient if you find yourself riding late or you're trying to get set up before a coming rainstorm etc.

Naturally they don't have the space of a larger camping trailer like you would tow behind your car but they do come with anywhere from 10 to 15 cubic feet of storage while you tow and often include drawers and ice boxes and are really quite functional.

I don't however find them to be particularly cheap to buy. You'll be looking at a couple of thousand dollars anyway unless you can find one used. They are out there though so go ahead and check them out. There is a motorcycle camping trailer out there that is right for you. I will be updating this page with my favorites as I research them to help bring the good ones to your attention.
