The Best Food for Camping is...
What's the best food for camping? Well that's simple... It's pretty much anything you want it to be! Well almost anyways...
I actually do have certain foods that I like to take camping when compared to other foods. Those that have surfed this site a bit already know that dehydrated food is my absolute favorite to take on the trail. It's easy to carry and only requires water to prepare it so you really can't go wrong with it. This type of food is good for people that are hiking and camping, canoe camping, or kayak camping.
I tend tend to make a huge deal out of it and spend a month or so preparing my own food with my dehydarator. It's part of the whole experience to me. Those that don't have a dehydrator or simply don't have the time or energy to put into preparing meals can buy freeze dried foods from most outfitters. I've used these before as well and can tell you they're usually very tasty. Another advantage to freeze dried food is that you can buy breakfast meals that you may not be able to prepare in your dehydrator at home. I have tried and tried to dehydrate scrambled eggs but I just cannot bring myself to eat them. Freeze dried breakfasts are awesome!
Other good food for camping would include anything that you do not have to keep cool, for example mac and cheese, rice meals, oatmeal, etc. These foods are dry and arent going to cause your camping gear to become a big sticky mess should it happen to break open while you're travelling (Another reason I like dehydrated foods...).
In my opinion, the worst food for camping is meat and anything you have to keep cool like milk or anything else that can spoil. I do on occcasion take a steak with me on the trail or maybe even a bit of bacon. I make sure that the steak gets eaten the first day and that the bacon is eaten the next morning. I don't prefer to keep food like that around because it can attract animals that can range from being a nuisance to being dangerous, depending on where you're camping, due to th smell of it.
If you're one of the lucky ones that owns an RV or a small camping trailer then you have nothing to worry about. You can pretty much take whatever you like because you most likely have a fridge, albeit slightly smaller, to help keep your food cool. I'm personally not convinced that being in a trailer would keep a bear away from your fridge but I haven't experienced any problems that way either.
Leaving your cooler outside is an invitation to all types of animals to "come and get it". My experience is that you will have more nuisance animals at a popular campground than you will camping in the back country. Back country animals are not used to seeing humans and have more of a tendancy to stay away. However, you should never, ever, leave your food in your tent. Animals can be unpredictable and you wouldn't want to be in your tent after a hungry raccoon has chewed through the wall to try to get at your food. They can be vicous!
