Are you looking for a family camping tent?
When you're looking for a family camping tent there are a few things you should consider. You obviously need to consider the size of your family. I'm not sure that this is a "rule of thumb" or not but when I buy a tent I always like to make sure it has capacity for one person than I require, i.e. if four people are sharing a tent I would purchase a tent that sleeps five as a minimum. Four people in a four person tent would be literally shoulder to shoulder. Having the extra space offers a little "sprawl room" or even space to store some extra clothing and such.
The packed size is something I like to consider as well. Of course tents are no longer like they used to be back when I was a boy. They used to be made of canvas and weighed a ton. Not to mention they weren't very packable. These days materials are generally lighter, more durable and more waterproof.
The odd family camping tent is actually segregated into different rooms which is a bonus for affording you some privacy from the kids or even another couple of adults.
Take your time deciding what you need in a tent, remember to plan for some extra room and packability and buy one you think will last a long time. With proper care you will get years of enjoyment out of your tent. Be sure to not put it away wet or it will stink in a way you can never seem to get rid of.
