Discount tents...
As far as I'm concerned, discount tents are nothing more than tents you can pick up for very little money. I suppose they exist but my feeling in general is that you get what you pay for and should focus on value for the money and not simply on the cost.
You can go to your favorite department store and buy a tent there for quite cheap. For most people these tents are more than adequate but be warned, they will not be as durable as a tent purchased from an outfitter or as waterproof ar anything else that's desirable in a tent. Yes you can get them pretty cheap but you're really getting a pretty cheap tent.
If you go to your local outfitter you're not likely to find discount tents at all on the current years' model. My experience tells me that many outfitters have no problem charging lots of money for anything that you buy there, tents are no exception. However you may pick up a good deal on last years' model or a floor model maybe.
An alternative to tents bought from a store would be to check out the online auctions or even buy and sell type pages to look for used stuff. You'll need to be careful about what you're buying though as it will likely be impossible to inspect before you buy but it is a viable alternative.
Try to avoid buying tents or anything to do with camping because it's cheaper. It is likely to degrade your camping experience when your tent leaks or blows over. Instead, if you can't afford to buy something better, consider buying decent used gear. You'll be far more comfortable when on the trail. I've experienced tents that leak and blow over on you in the night and can say very honestly that I truly appreciate the difference in quality. You only have to buy it once after all...
