Cooking gear for camping...
Choosing the right cooking gear for camping can be a tad overwhelming, especially if you’re new to the whole camping scene. There are all sorts of sets and single item cooking pieces available and it can be difficult to know which one is best for you and your camping trip. Well… the goal of this page is to help take some of the pressure off of you when trying to select the right gear.
I’ve found that in general, hard core campers like to spend quite a bit of money on their camping gear while newbies tend to try not to spend too much. This is understandable but you have to be willing to spend at least a little bit of money to buy the right equipment because to be honest, if you’re not able to cook when you’re camping then your trip is going to be quite a bit less enjoyable. So let’s get started then…
For most people that are wishing to go camping with a couple of friends for a weekend or a few days, a mess kit like the one pictured below is what I’ve opted to use. They’re a reasonable price and I have been using mine for about seven years now so it’s safe to say that if they’re handled properly, they will last a long, long, time. That makes it a better bargain actually when you consider the cost over the life of the gear. It amounts to just a few bucks a year. These particular kits are not a ‘non stick’ type but I’ve found that a little bit of vegetable oil usually helps to take care of that problem. More experienced campers like to purchase the Teflon cooking gear for camping. When making a purchase like this tough you need to be aware that you will be using in on the trail and it will be prone to becoming scratched etc. However if you take care of it properly then you’ll find camping cooking is even easier than you ever imagined. No matter which set you choose you need to be sure to take care of them properly for them to last you a long time. That means using a camping stove instead of a fire, keeping them clean and not putting them on heat when they're dry. With the teflon sets you need to be sure to put water in them before melting snow.
