Need a camping tip to help get started?

Camping Tip #1

For me the most important camping tip has to do with gear selection. If you have the means financially, spend the money on good gear. This is the best advice I can give you to get you started. Sure, you can get get gear pretty cheap at Wal-Mart and the like. If you're camping in an RV or trailer then their stuff works pretty good.

If you're going to tackle the back country then their stuff just doesn't do the job as well. They're sleeping bags are big and bulky and not all that warm and are not quick to dry should they get wet. Their stoves are large and hard to carry and their lanterns are huge. This makes hiking and camping more difficult.

If you are driving to a site with your family and you have the room to pack it all then that sort of gear works fine but if you're doing a canoe trip then going to an outfitter of some description is your best bet. They'll have excellent three and four season sleeping bags, an excellent choice of tents, cookware that's packable. Go check one of these places out, it's like being in campers' heaven to me.

camping tip #2

This one is not so much a tip but as much as it's common sense really. Carefully plan your meals to last the duration of your stay and don't pack much more than that. I use a food dehydrator to dehydrate chili and soups and such. It's awesome because it doesn't go bad, it's lighter to carry, and I don't require a cooler or fridge to make sure it'll keep. All I have to do is keep it out of the sunlight. Some foods rehydrate better than others so be careful what you do dehydrate. It'll take longer for some of it to come back to life. Although I know you can buy "just add water" breakfasts that are quite delicious, I personally have had no luck whatsoever dehydrating eggs.

You don't want to get on the trail with a buch of steaks and bacon and have it go bad on you. If you must bring that sort of food then be sure to freeze it and wrap it well so it doesn't get all over the place as it thaws.

camping tip#3

The life saving camping tip. If you're going to take a camping trip by canoe be sure to wear a wetsuit in addition to your life jacket. The wetsuit will help to give you warmth in the event you capsize and also it will help to make you more bouyant which will make your swim to shore. I've been in the cold water and know what it's like to try to swim when you're freezing and believe me, you can use all the help you can get. It's no problem to wear it under your regular clothes so it doesn't take up any space but be sure to wear it, you may be glad you did.
