The Camping Tent Tip Page...

Welcome to the camping tent tip page. You may be wondering what kind of tip can possibly be offered but you may be suprised!

First of all, when selecting a tent you should have some idea of how many people are going to be sleeping in it. Four adults you say? Well you may be suprised to know that it's alway best to buy your tent so that it is rated for one more body than you will be using it for. The tent will only be marginally larger when packed but it will give you more room to spread out and be comfortable when sleeping.

I've actually learned this the hard way. I once bought a two man tent for a four day back country trip I was going to go on (a camping tent tip I could have used...). My buddy and I shared the tent. It was nice to carry but it sure was tiny to sleep in. We were literally shoulder to shoulder and you simply could not move with out waking the other guy up. It packed down to a nice size for carrying but to be honest with you, I replaced it with a three man that is considerably larger and it packs down to a size that is not too much larger than that of the first tent.

Another good camping tent tip is to pay attention to the number of poles a tent has. This is important because many tents come with two poles and some come with three or more. Now, when I say pole I mean one of those piece together poles that is held together by an elastic rope. Two poles will criss cross to make an 'X', three poles will usually cross each other and leave a triangular shape on the roof of the tent.

It really depends where you are I guess but it's always been my experience that three pole tents are simply more sturdy when facing the elements than two pole tents are. I have had two pole tents blow down right on top of my face while sleeping in a wind storm. This is much less likely to happen in a three pole tent and it fact has never happened to me while using one.

Another bonus of using a three pole tent is that they tend to offer more head room. It's as if the three poles carry more of the tent's roof in a way that makes the tent appear to have more room to do things like get dressed or undressed.

Another camping tent tip that you may not think of right away is to have a tent with a peg out vestibule. This will allow you to have a place to put your backpack and clothing and stuff. This will leave you more room inside the tent for sleeping bags and Thermarest mattresses but will allow you to keep you personal effects dry and out of harms way at the same time.

BUT!!!... And I can't stress this enough, you may in fact read it on just about every page of my site... Do not put food of any kind in your tent or vestibule. Different campsites have different problem 'critters' but be warned that many of them are not afraid to come into your vestibule or even tent at night if think there's an easy shot at some food. Leave that stuff in your car or tied up between two trees 100 feet away from your tent. The same thing applies to anything that might smell nice, i.e. toothpaste, deodorant, gum, etc. Don't take chances with that. Camping is very safe but there's simply not much sense in tempting Mother Nature.
