Have you made out your camping list yet?

Making out a camping list is a good way to be organized and help you figure out how to pack. You have a tendancy to make your list, go on your camping trip, realize you've forgotten something, and add that item to your list for the next trip.

Eventually though you will have most of everything you need on that list and you'll find it gets edited less and less. You may find from time to time that your upcoming trip requires a special item that the last trip didn't require, but there are certain items you'll need all of the time. These are the items that should be on the list.

My camping list is kept in a drawer in my nightstand where I can access it any time. It has all the basics that I require on it and may overlook if for some reason I've removed it from my camping gear that I usually keep together. man in kayak Of course there are the obvious things that you need like a tent(if you're not already camping in a trailer or RV), sleeping bag, extra clothing, food etc... but there are other things that should be on your camping list that may not be so obvious. Naturally you can make your camping list exhaustive but keep in mind that you will have to pack and unpack all of the stuff you bring, not to mention carry it it if you're hiking or paddling so try to pack accordingly. My list looks something like this,

My camping list...

man hiking up abandoned railway bed Tent, Sleeping Bag, Self inflating Air mattress, Two ultralight tarps, Light nylon string (to tie the tarps), Compression straps, 50' of 3/8" yellow nylon rope, Camping stove and fuel, Camping cookware, Sponge and scouring pad, Cutlery, Drybags, Insect repellant, Insect hoods, Matches, Flint type firestarter (in case matches get wet, takes some practice though), UCO Candle lantern and candles (one candle per night), Glow sticks, Gerber tool, GPS Unit, Map of area, MSR Water filter, Coffee Press, Dehydrated food, Small plastic nalgene bottle of canola oil, Spices, Oatmeal( I don't require a cooler when I eat dried foods), Camping chair, Nylon rain suit, Toothbrush, Toothpaste, Biodegradable soap, Deodorant, Towel.

If I need a pillow I use a stuff sack that I can fill with clothing when I'm hiking or paddling, otherwise I just bring a pillow with me.

If I'm paddling in the spring or fall seasons then a wetsuit is on my camping list as well. I simply wear it under my clothing. If you've ever fallen in the spring water then you know how cold it can be. A wetsuit may even save your life. Also I bring a lifejacket.

And don't forget your first aid kit.

Naturally I pack all of this stuff in my backpack or lash it to my pack so be sure to practice how you pack it. The picture of me in the kayak above is the result of poor planning. I got to the area I was going to start my trip from but had not properly pre packed, only to find I could not get my pack into my kayak! My yellow rope came in handy that day!
