Camping food ideas to make it easier...
This page is dedicated to giving you some camping food ideas. If you think about how and what type of food you're going to pack it can help to make your camping trip very enjoyable and you can carry less weight with you as well.
Back when I started camping I always had the idea of cooking steaks over an open fire, sitting on a log enjoying my meal fit for a king. So I would bring some steak, Italian sausages, bacon... whatever you can think of. We would freeze the food first of course and would have to eat that particular food early in the trip because it would thaw and we would worry about it going bad. Some folks will take a cooler with them but becuase on our trips we're always moving, it's impractical to bring a cooler because they're just too heavy.
I learned that this was just not the best way for me to eat on the trail because by the end of my trip I was always down to having the food I least cared for. I began to realize that there were certain foods I could bring that were great all the time. Things like rice and fettucci alfredo mixes, even macaroni and cheese. That's OK for me because I like that stuff but some people don't.
Then I came across one of the best camping food ideas ever! If you've been around this site then you already kow that I am a HUGE fan of the food dehydrator. You can buy dehydrated meals to take with you camping but I always have found that while they're usually very tasty they can be a tad expensive. Enter the food dehydrator. They make eating dehydrated food much cheaper. As I've said before, I use my dehydrator to make chili and spagetti sauces, hearty soups and stews. You can dehydrate fruit and vegetables too. You can even dehydrate applesauce to use as apple fruit chews. Camping food ideas are almost endless when you have one of these dehydrators.
You can eat the fruit and veggies in their dehydrated form or let them soak in water until they regain most of their original composition. Soups and stuff like that is easily turned into a very hearty meal by adding water and cooking.
Below is the same dehydrator that I use. It's farily cheap compared to some but you can check for yourself. Go ahead and click on it to check it out. it'll open in a new window so you won't lose your place here...
There are several advantages to using dehydrated food when you're camping. The first of course is that you can eat a meal like you could make at home very easily on the trail and it will taste great. Another advantage that may be overlooked is that once dehydrated, food loses much of it's weight so it becomes much easier to carry. Also you don't need to keep it cool or anything like that. It won't spoil. Just keep it out of the sun and it'll be fine.
You can see by looking at the image above that the trays are not solid and you may wonder how you would dehydrate sauces and such using this item. I simply place waxed paper on the trays and pur the suace directly onto the paper. Once it starts to dehydrate you can pull the paper off and let the dehydrator finish without the paper. You'll want to take the paper off though or it will be almost impossible to remove if you let it dehydrate too long.
If you don't want to put out the effort to make your own drehydrated food then you can always buy it. Click on the banner below to see more about how to buy camping food...
Other camping food ideas include things that don't spoil like oatmeal, rice dishes, pastas, even canned goods. Just be sure to take your cans with you when you leave.
