Camping Equipment Essentials...

There are certain camping equipment essentials that you will absolutely require when you head out to the woods for the first time. I keep saying throughout this site that the key to a successful camping trip lies in proper planning and planning what you’re going to bring with you is number one on the list of things to plan for.

Without even thinking about it you know there are certain things you’re going to need before you even start. I’m talking about things like a tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, camp stove, food, etc. However there are lots of things you should bring along that you may not think of right away.

The ability to stay warm is generally your biggest concern if you’re planning a camping trip at any time other than the dead of summer. You’re going to need to bring along some extra clothing but you should really make an effort to pack smart. Be sure to bring clothing that will not only keep you warm but will also dry quickly in the event of you getting wet for some unforeseen reason. Generally denim is the worst thing to wear because it just does not dry out that quickly and is horribly uncomfortable when it’s wet.

You may consider bringing clothing that is not only waterproof but breathable as well. This will aid in cooling your body down during long treks and hikes or any other kind of activity by allowing your sweat to be evaporated into the air. Should you for some reason decide that you will bring a plastic raincoat t keep dry you can bet that if you choose to wear it you will very likely become sweaty and uncomfortable at some point.

Along the thought of keeping warm, you need to plan on having a fire. In order to do this you’re going to need to be able to get wood, so you will likely need a saw or a hatchet and you will need some means of lighting a fire, i.e. matches or a lighter, even a flint. You need to plan to the point that your matches will not be able to get wet. I usually choose to use matches but I also have a flint that I use as a back up. You should become familiar with using one though, before being forced to use one on the trail. They can be a tad difficult to use and you should experiment with them before actually relying on one. I find that very light paper like toilet paper is the best to light with a flint. It will ignite easily as well as dried leaves and grass etc. A flint will not be ruined if it gets wet although don’t really recommend allowing to get wet.

Also, don’t forget that it gets dark in the woods… very dark. If you are not around the campfire then you’re going to need one of my very favorite camping equipment essentials. I’m talking about a lantern of some sort. My personal favorite is the UCO candle lantern. They’re very small and I actually use it to light up my tent at night. The candles burn for about nine hours and give enough light that you can see but not so much that it will keep you awake. I am not telling you that you should burn a candle in your tent. I’m simply saying that I do and that the UCO Candle Lantern is my lantern of choice. A small flashlight or even a headlamp is good choice as well.

You need to plan for eating as well. I always find it’s easiest to eat out of the same pots I cook in. Of course if you’re camping wit your family then you will want to have some plates and utensils for each of you. In the back country I like to keep it fairly simple however I do have some particular food ideas for camping that you can check out as well.

These are just a few of the items I consider camping equipment essentials. Naturally each trip has its’ own needs and you need to plan for them accordingly.
