A camping cot will help you stay comfortable...A camping cot is a worthwhile purchase if you are "car camping". Being out in the fresh air all day can really knock you out at night and if you're not getting proper sleep then it's going to catch up to you quickly. Probably the biggest advantage that sleeping on a camping cot has is that it get you off the ground. This is very important. Simply laying a sleeping bag on the ground is not going to keep you warm enough if the weather is even close to inclimate. The ground will just "suck" all the heat from your body and cause you to have chills or even worse, cause you to get sick. There are different types available depending on the type of person you are and the level of comfort you desire. For those that wish to be pampered you can buy folding beds at Wal-Mart or some place like it. These are similar in design to the folding patio furniture that they carry which is so popular. They're fairly large and I suspect will take up a fair amount of room in your trunk but you will be comfortable.
As an altternative you might visit a military surplus store and purchase a folding cot there. It's sure to be smaller but it will be easier to carry if you're on the move at all and will serve the main function of the cot, to get you off the ground.
Your sleeping arrangements are really going to be dictated by the type of camping you plan on doing. Something larger is suitable if you're camping from your car, if you're hiking or paddling then you likely will want to consider something smaller and lighter. The important thing to remember about a camping cot is that it has to not only get you off he ground, but keep you comfortable so you can enjoy your camping trip and hopefully have another trip because it "was such an enjoyable experience the last time".
